Lockhart Power is dedicated to environmental sustainability. From our administrative offices to how we produce power, we believe in doing what’s right for the environment. That’s why we operate four run-of-river hydroelectric projects licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Lockhart also owns and operates the Wellford Renewable Energy (WREN) Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project in Wellford, S.C. Lockhart Power constructed the WREN facility in 2011 and uses the methane output of the Wellford Landfill to produce power. Lockhart also operates and maintains the gas collection and treatment systems for the landfill owner, Spartanburg County, in addition to a 6-mile pipeline feeding additional gas to an industrial plant.

Landfill gas is a natural byproduct of decomposing organic waste in landfills and is primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide. Instead of allowing these gases to escape into the atmosphere and contribute to climate change, we capture them and convert the gas into a valuable energy source.

The collected gas can be processed to remove impurities and moisture, producing a cleaner and more efficient fuel source. This purified gas can then be used to fuel generators or other power-generation equipment to produce electricity.

Using landfill gas energy, Lockhart Power effectively turns a waste product into a valuable resource. This approach contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating odor issues associated with landfills, and generating renewable energy.
